Many people are turning to upcycled furniture as a way to contribute to a more environmentally friendly life. Here we explore a few reasons why upcycled furniture is a much better choice for the environment than buying brand new pieces

Sustainability and eco-consciousness are increasingly becoming more important than ever before. Nowadays, it is seen as a trend, but here at Stolichki, we see sustainability as a concept, where the environment is an exhaustible source. That is why we want to highlight the importance of using the resources that are already available to us, in order to protect our Earth and environment.

Why upcycle?

One area where upcycling has gained significant traction is in the world of furniture, with business like us, using it as a process where we are giving vintage furniture a second life. For example, according to Zero Waste Scotland, more than 125,000 sofas are thrown away annually, with just 15% being recycled or reused. In addition, often these upcycled pieces of furniture are likely to last longer as they are extremely quality pieces.

So, how exactly does upcycled furniture benefit the environment? 1. Upcycled furniture reduces landfill waste

One of the most significant environmental benefits of upcycled furniture is that it helps reduce landfill waste. Did you know that over 22 million pieces of furniture are discarded each year in the UK, and the majority is sent directly to landfill?

Instead of throwing away old furniture, which often ends up in landfills, upcycling gives these items a new purpose. By repurposing and refurbishing old furniture, we can significantly decrease the amount of waste that ends up in our landfills. 2. Upcycled furniture saves natural resources

The production of new furniture requires the use of valuable natural resources such as wood, metal, and fabric. By upcycling existing furniture, we can conserve these resources and reduce the need for new materials. 3. Upcycled furniture reduces carbon emissions

The manufacturing and transportation of new furniture contribute to greenhouse gas emissions. On the other hand, upcycling furniture eliminates the need for new production and reduces the carbon emissions associated with it. By choosing upcycled furniture, you can make a positive impact on the environment by reducing your carbon footprint. 4. You will support local business

Businesses like us specialise in upcycling and reselling vintage furniture. By purchasing upcycled furniture, you are supporting local businesses who are passionate about giving new life to old pieces. This helps to create a sustainable economy and fosters a sense of community.
